Why You Shouldn't Use Coffee mate

Digestive sensitivity is a common problem for both younger and older folks. Dairy is very often incompatible in small or large ways, and the search for a substitute may lead you to Nestle’s Coffee mate.

It doesn’t look too bad on first glance - 35 calories, 0 saturated fat, 5 mg. sugar. The label says it’s triple-churned - 2 times richer than milk.

Here are just a few things that might make you feel just a little bit deceived:

35 calories: that’s if you only use 1/2 ounce per serving

0 saturated fat: true, but lots of trans fats, which are the harmful fats

5 mg. sugar: again, that’s if you only use 1/2 ounce in your coffee

Additionally, because this is a highly processed product, there are a number of additives that may cause concern:

Dipotassium phosphate: safe for healthy individuals, but it can be dangerous for those with common health problems, including kidney disease, severe heart and lung disease, and thyroid problems. It's used as a buffering agent in antifreeze, and in food as an additive to emulsify, stabilize, or provide texture.

Carrageenan: a food additive that is a stabilizing and emulsifying agent. Carrageenan may be harmful to human health and may cause bloating, inflammation and digestive problems.

If you’re also adding a packet of artificial sugar to your morning coffee, you are literally starting the day with a toxic potion.

What are the alternatives?

Could you drink your coffee black? That would be a possibility. Add some ground cinnamon to it and get the benefits of this medicinal spice if you need a little flavor.

Califia Farms offerings: Califia Farms plant milks are made with plant-based, dairy-free ingredients that are Non-GMO Certified, Kosher, vegan, and free from carrageenan. Try the Unsweetened almond or coconut.

Nestle says Coffee mate is America’s #1 creamer; it may be, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good or healthy choice. McDonald’s may be America’s #1 fast food restaurant, but we all know that doesn’t mean best.
