Gratitude and giving

When I was a little girl, my school gave each of us a box to collect coins for UNICEF. That set the tone for end of year giving and it continued with food drives at Thanksgiving and toy drives at Christmas.

Because of enhanced communication, today we can put numbers to the scope of need around the world. We know there are nearly 42 million Americans, or roughly 12%, who rely on SNAP benefits to keep food on the table. We now know that in this land of abundance not everyone is able to buy enough food for their families without the help of government :

Ideas for making life more manageable:

  1. working people should be given wages that support a decent life

  2. food pantries should be accessible to all who need them

  3. those who are able should donate to local food pantries

  4. job training should be accessible to all for a more secure future

  5. citizens should receive help on how to prepare healthy meals on a budget
