Hippocrates and the Power of Food for Healing

Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, said to fellow physicians, “Leave your drugs in the chemist’s pot if you can heal the patient with food.”  This powerful statement signifies the inherent power of food to heal. It also suggests the distant second place drugs have in supporting health. Drugs, while sometimes unavoidable, should be considered a last resort rather than a first choice when health goes awry
Food in its purest form is the source of all the nutrients and energy you need. When food is fresh and local, it is the closest thing to being alive when you consume it. When food is so vibrant that it is nearly alive, you are deriving the best possible nutrients from it.
Today there is a groundswell of interest in the quality of food, how to get it, and how it affects an individual’s health. Many of the people I see have had health scares, or have realized that quality food is essential to their improving and/or continuing health. Studies show that only 30% of your health is related to your genetics, and a whopping 70% is the result of your lifestyle.
Simply knowing these facts can be the impetus you need to make changes in the foods you eat.  Think about this when you are confronted with a choice of a highly processed meal filled with chemicals and additives, or a meal composed of whole grains, a sweet and green vegetable and perhaps a small portion of wild fish or hormone free meat.  Which will be your choice? If the former is your habit, and the latter your desire, make a commitment to learn how to eat in the healthier way. .
You are always welcome to schedule a phone or in person consultation with me to discuss your specific health challenges and goals. Taking time to do this will help you clarify what steps you need to take so you might adhere to Hippocrates’ advice to physicians so many years ago.
