How I Became a Health Counselor
I am a Health and Lifestyle Counselor, Wellness Speaker and the Founder of Wellness and You. My path to holistic nutrition began from a personal experience that changed my life. I had what I thought was a lifelong allergy to most fresh fruits. From a very young age, I would develop hives in my mouth within minutes after eating many kinds of fresh fruits. It was determined to be an “allergy” and I was forced to avoid eating this natural source of sugar. With no access to fresh fruits and their natural sugars, I developed a lifelong craving for sweets in their refined form – candy and cookies. Even knowing these were not good choices, my body continued to crave them, because I was not getting the natural and healthy forms of sugar that fresh fruit provides. This of course did not support my health, but I couldn’t seem to find a way to stop eating these sugars. I didn’t eat an enormous amount of them, but they were a part of my daily food intake.
Then I made an amazing discovery. I’d been reading and studying nutrition theory of some time, and kept reading about the benefits of eating organic. Because I’d never had a serious (anaphylactic) reaction to eating fresh fruits, I decided to try eating a bit of an organic apple. To my delight, I had no hives! I ate the rest of the apple, and I was fine. Then I tried a peach, a plum, a pear, and the same thing happened – no reaction! It was like a lever flipped into the right position. I wasn’t allergic to fruits at all. I was reacting to the pesticide residue that is sprayed on conventional fruit!
As soon as I incorporated a regular intake of fresh fruit into my daily eating plan, cravings for refined sugars vanished. My triglycerides dropped 200 points within 6 months. My body was healing from the long term effects of too much refined sugars in a short period of time. My own experience with nutritional exploration has given me a deeper understanding of the mind, body, and health connection.
This personal experience made me look deeper into the benefits of eating well. All the food we eat becomes a part of us, and when we eat in a way that supports our bodies, they will respond in very positive ways. If you are experiencing symptoms or cannot seem to keep your food choices healthy, it is time to look at what may be causing this dynamic. We all want to feel good, and making food choices that are best for your body will quickly lead you to the path of wellness.
